? This past week has brought some bad news for people who like to buy their genetically modified corn at Wal-Mart. The research results are in from the first-ever peer reviewed long-term study of genetically engineered food that has been published in the journal Food and Chemical Toxicology. For two years, researchers had fed rats with a diet of GM corn that is quite common in the US food supply. The rats that survived were found to have massive mammary tumors, kidney and liver destruction.
The Monsanto GM corn, labeled NK603, has been engineered to be resistant to Roundup, Monsanto?s weed killer. NK603 (GM corn) is designed to allow farmers to douse fields with the herbicide roundup without worrying about killing their own corn crops. The new long term study has found that rats fed a regular diet of GM corn or exposed to Roundup were more likely to develop tumors and die sooner. Previously, industry-funded studies have determined that GM corn is safe to eat. But those studies were much shorter-term, consisting of only 90 day trials.
The latest research, done in France, reveals that 50 percent of male rats and 70 percent of female rats fed Monsanto?s GM corn and weed killer died prematurely. The French government is sounding the alarm and is ?urging European government authorities to take necessary measures to protect human and animal health.? The Wall Street Journal has also sounded an alarm of a different sort. A large sell-off of Monsanto?s stock is expected to take place when the market opens this Monday.
The California?s Progress Report website states that the new ?research adds to the growing body of evidence that links genetically engineered foods to allergies, organ toxicity and other illnesses. These findings underscore the importance of giving California?s families the right to know whether our food has been genetically engineered in a laboratory.? Proposition 37 may not now be a proposition that can easily be disregarded by concerned voters
? A new study is concluding that chronic fatigue is not caused by a virus. Chronic fatigue syndrome affects about a million people in the United States. Women are more likely to have the disease where people suffer an unexplained fatigue which does not get any better with bed rest or medications. Not aware what was happening to them, patients found some relief or reassurance in the belief that it was some mysterious virus that was infecting them. Researchers from the U.S. National Institutes of Health, the U.S. CDC and Columbia University concluded that no known virus exists. Patients with chronic fatigue are not victims of a virus.
? People who cooked with a blend of sesame and rice bran oils saw a significant drop in blood pressure and improved cholesterol levels, according to new research presented at the American Heart Association?s High Blood Pressure Research 2012 Scientific Sessions. The researchers found cooking with a combination of these oils in a variety of ways worked nearly as well as a commonly prescribed high blood pressure medication. ?Rice bran oil, like sesame oil, is low in saturated fat and appears to improve a patient?s cholesterol profile,? said Devarajan Sankar, M.D.,Ph.D., and research scientist in Japan.
In a recent study of 300 people with moderately high blood pressure, those taking medication had their blood pressure drop 16 points. Those who consumed a diet of rice bran and sesame oil had their blood pressure drop by 14 points. Those using both diet and medication found even bigger drops in blood pressure.
? There was some surprising news about cranberry juice during the American Heart Association?s High Blood Pressure Research 2012 Scientific Sessions. In a study that measured the effects of drinking low-calorie cranberry juice, participants drank cranberry juice or a placebo drink every day for eight weeks as part of a controlled diet. After eight weeks, blood pressure values dropped a little for those drinking the cranberry juice daily. Previous studies have shown some promise for berry or pomegranate juices to lower blood pressure.
However, because an industry like Ocean Spray Cranberries, Inc. funded the study, the American Heart Association is distancing itself from the study and does not wish to take a position on whether cranberry juice is excellent for lowering blood pressure.
