That???s not the real me: How vanity sabotages Facebook advertising

keyboard share button

When the elaborate self-portrait known as a Facebook profile seldom resembles the real thing, can advertisers really reach the right people?

I?m not the real me on Facebook.

?Facebook Louie? records music, cofounded a record label, and is friends with notable musicians, producers, and visual artists. ?Facebook Louie? is kind of cool, and, when he heard from at all, confines his views to the least controversial of topics.

The person writing this column is not ?Facebook Louie,? it?s the Louie that has invested at least 150 hours into Diablo 3 (as nerdy as that might be), and adores? The Real World/Road Rules Challenge?(as embarrassing as that is). This ?Authentic Louie? is less cool, but more real.

None of us are our authentic, honest selves on Facebook. We censor things which are embarrassing and which disagree with the personas we have constructed there. Social science agrees with me (well, two theories do, at least). That could be bad news for Facebook.

You vs. you

The sheer amount of information we pour into social networks like Facebook might make them seem like ideal advertising platforms, but they?re actually at an odd disadvantage in some ways: Facebook?s public nature makes us behave more like characters and less like our authentic selves. In that regard, Facebook has less accurate information about us than competitors like Google. That means that Facebook ads are often less relevant to us, and, therefore, less valuable to advertisers ? a serious problem for a company that rakes in all of its revenue from targeted advertising.

All the world?s a stage

A theatrical metaphor developed by Canadian sociologist?Erving Goffman?is useful for understanding our behavior on Facebook. First put forth in his book The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life, Goffman offered the following description of his dramaturgical theory of communication in his later work, Frame Analysis.

I am suggesting that often what talkers undertake to do is not to provide information to a recipient, but to present dramas to an audience. Indeed, it seems that we spend most of our time not engaged in giving information, but in giving shows.

According to Goffman?s theory, when communicating we adopt a role suitable to our environment and capable of achieving our goals. We are actors on a stage. Shakespeare, as ever, proves prescient.

social network facebookThis model describes my activities on Facebook with uncanny accuracy. My goal on Facebook is to cultivate new and strengthen existing social connections. Many of those connections are within Portland?s music?scene?(a word particularly apt to the metaphor), so I portray myself in a way that fits that scene and my goals within it. This means leaving some things ? Diablo 3, for example ? out of that portrayal.

Because of Facebook?s interpersonal nature, the version of self I reveal there will never be as complete as my portrayal when using Google search. It is unlikely that my Google search habits will become publicly known, so I don?t give censorship a second thought. Google knows about my love-hate relationship with Diablo 3. Facebook does not, because this trait does not fit the role I portray there.

Absent self-censorship, the information I reveal indirectly via Google search paints a more complete picture of me than what I disclose directly via Facebook. This is one reason that Google Adwords can be a better product than Facebook?s ads. Google knows more about me, and can therefore offer better targeting data to its advertisers.

Sex, drugs, and reality TV

Role-based censorship is just one of the ways that we limit the depictions of ourselves on Facebook. We may censor ourselves just as much or more when it comes to topics we find private or embarrassing.

Drawing on research dating back to the mid-1950?s, Robert J. Fisher writes of this bias in the introduction to?Social Desirability Bias and the Validity of Indirect Questioning.

Unfortunately, the basic human tendency to present oneself in the best possible light can significantly distort the information gained from self-reports. ? The result is data that are systematically biased toward respondents? perceptions of what is ?correct? or socially acceptable.

Questions about sexual behavior or illicit drug use often return skewed results, as research subjects will seek to avoid disparaging or incriminating responses.

Facebook login page article main headerBecause Facebook is a public medium based largely on self reporting through status updates and other posts, it?s susceptible to the same bias. Therefore, it will see fewer posts relating to subjects traditionally biased against, like sex and drugs. Because we all want to be cool, there will be more posts about subjects not traditionally biased against.

For example, I am a recent devotee of?The Real World/Road Rules Challenge. I?m ashamed to admit it, but Johnny Bananas? epic season 16 performance hooked me.?The Challenge?might actually be my favorite show. However, you will see no mention of it on my Facebook profile. Why? Well, what would people think, if they knew? Suddenly I?m ?reality TV guy.? Who wants to be ?reality TV guy??

There are sites out there that know my secret. Google, because my general research about the show, and Amazon, from whom I can purchase full seasons of the show. Once again, Facebook?s competitors have more information about me due to my tendency to reveal more information indirectly than directly. Google and Amazon can target ads based on those details. Facebook cannot.

Facebook?s problem

Of course, Facebook has problems beyond these, not least of which the astronomical expectations for the service at the time of its IPO. Facebook?s ads must improve if it is to meet those expectations. There are two ways that it can do so. The first is to roll out new products from which it can yield new sources of targeting data. The service?s rumored ?Want? button may be the most significant step in this direction.

The second way Facebook can improve its targeting data is much more difficult, and challenges the two communications theories outlined above. Facebook needs us to share more honestly ? even when we find that sharing out-of-sync with who we pretend to be, or when that sharing reveals embarrassing things.

However, it remains to be seen if the information we give Facebook voluntarily will ever equal the value of the information we give its competitors involuntarily. Facebook certainly has the ambition to change our behavior. The future of the company may depend on whether it is successful.

China worries about social fallout of soybean oil price jump

BEIJING ? Construction laborer Yi Jichun has never heard of Illinois or Iowa. But the migrant worker's favorite comfort food comes straight out of the U.S. Midwest: soybean oil.

The world's biggest consumers of edible oils, Chinese households have developed a taste for the stuff that would make a county fair fry cook proud. Be it a simple stir-fry, poached fish or deep-fried pork ribs, many Chinese diners love their grub covered in an oily sheen. Jugs of the golden liquid make popular gifts for Chinese New Year.

"Without the oil, it would taste too plain," Yi said as he tucked into a lunch of sliced cucumbers and chicken drumsticks slathered with grease. "I wouldn't want to finish it."

And that has officials in Beijing worried. The worst U.S. drought in half a century is sending global grain prices soaring. The fallout is almost certain to be felt at dinner tables across China. The No. 1 foreign buyer of American soybeans, which are pressed into cooking oil and used for animal feed, China last year purchased about half of U.S. exports, more than $10.4 billion worth, according to the American Soybean Assn. China has also stepped up purchases of U.S. corn and wheat to feed the nation's growing appetite.

Poor U.S. harvests could fuel Chinese food inflation and social discontent. China has already begun tapping its grain reserves to ensure price stability. The government has ordered the nation's biggest cooking oil producers twice in recent months to keep their prices in check. And it's scouring the globe for alternative supplies.

It won't be easy. More than two-thirds of cooking oil consumed in China comes from soybeans, and most of those soybeans are supplied by the U.S., according to Ma Wenfeng, an analyst with Beijing Orient Agribusiness Consultant Co. For now, Chinese consumers are bound to the fortunes of farmers in the American heartland.

"Soybean oil is the most important edible oil in China ... which makes us vulnerable to the drought" gripping the U.S., Ma said.

Retail prices have so far held steady. A standard 5-liter jug (1.32 gallons) of edible oil in China averages about $9.76 today, only 24 cents more than at the beginning of the year, Ma said.

But that could change if the U.S. soybean harvest proves especially weak. Prices have risen about 40% since January to more than $16 a bushel.

Expensive grain means higher costs for animal feed, which leads to pricier meat, milk and eggs. That's especially tough on people in developing countries. In China, consumers devote more than one-fifth of their monthly income to food, about three times more than their American counterparts, according to the USDA.

That's "why authorities get concerned about social stability," said Alistair Thornton, a Beijing-based analyst for IHS Global Insight. "Inflation has a long history of sparking discontent, so obviously it's on the forefront of the Chinese leadership's mind."

Rising Chinese incomes in recent years have fueled a surge in meat consumption. Ditto for cooking oil, which a few decades ago was rationed with food stamps. Fan Zhihong, a nutrition expert at China Agricultural University in Beijing, said that's leading to more obesity and heart disease.

"With economic development, people now have enough money for cooking oil. So they spoil themselves by using lots and making their food delicious," Fan said. "They'll even make a healthy dish of dark leafy greens into a fatty dish."

An artery-clogging sample of Beijing's local treats includes pai cha (crispy fried dough), xian bing (fried pancakes stuffed with pork and chives) and zha jiang mian (room temperature noodles topped with bean paste that often arrives submerged in half an inch of clear grease).

"It tastes better when it's fried," said Li Yuanying, 25, espousing a universal truth as she purchased deep-fried vegetable balls at aWal-Martcooked food counter in Beijing's central business district.

Before her was a shiny selection of fried chilies, fried peanuts, fried crullers, fried pancakes and fried sesame balls. Nearby, stacked high against a wall, was an arsenal of cooking oils that would have made Southern cooking star Paula Deen feel right at home. In addition to soybean oil, there were large jugs of peanut, corn, rapeseed, palm, tea seed and fish oils.

"I tell our board members that it reminds me of the cereal aisle in the U.S.," said Paul Burke, the Beijing-based regional director of the U.S. Soybean Export Council.

Prices ranged from $7.40 for 5 liters of soybean oil to $19.35 for a blend of olive and sunflower oils. In the U.S., such quantities might be suitable for restaurant owners or, say, someone deep-frying a turkey. But in China, they're a staple of the family grocery list.

"This may last me a little more than a month," said a senior citizen who purchased soybean oil because it was still cheaper than many of the alternatives.

Rising prices could be one way to get Chinese consumers to scale back on greasy food. But some cooks said they'll believe it when they see it.

"Everything needs oil," said a Beijing steamed bun vendor who gave only his surname, Chen. "Especially the vegetarian buns. If you don't put oil, it won't taste good."

100% The Invisible War

All Critics (41) | Top Critics (14) | Fresh (41) | Rotten (0)

"The Invisible War" makes all too clear that the military isn't very good at justice.

One hearing noted that the victim was dressed provocatively. In her official uniform.

For sheer infuriation value, you can't do much better than Kirby Dick's quietly scathing documentary on rape in the US military.

Dick, whose films include a revealing expose about the movie industry's film ratings board, has created yet another galvanizing call to action with "The Invisible War."

What happened to these women after the rape often shocks and disturbs them as much as the physical act itself.

It is far too difficult to watch. Which means we must.

Kirby Dick has again shown great restraint in presenting such inflammatory material, betting a clear-eyed approach will have an inflammatory effect on his audience -- and it does.

Basically, the message from the military to potential rape victims is: if you get raped, it's your own fault...

One of those documentaries that you watch both fascinated and repulsed - and one of those films that you sense just might be instrumental in helping to change an utterly unacceptable status quo.

...totally serious but, still, incredibly informative and quite shocking with his plethora of data.

In the end there is something to cheer about - vindication for some victims, and proof that a film can make a difference.

We learn that a military court has determined that rape is 'an occupational hazard' of serving in the military.

If this enrages you, it should.

If it doesn't make you angry, you're not human.

Agonizing, infuriating - and effective.

The film is persuasive and infuriating without leaving much hope for change.

[P]owerful rage against system carried by victims who detail sexism, harassment, stalking, rape, reprisals, and rebuffed complaints [whose] attackers haven't been punished.

Convincing look at how the military ignores rape and sexual assault within its ranks.

Powerful, provocative and deeply moving. One of the most vital and enraging documentaries of the year.

Aim is to soften the crushing burden of tuition and debt

Many colleges in the Boston area and beyond are boosting financial aid this fall to help offset rising ?tuition costs, building on efforts that have accelerated since the recession amid sharp criticism of spiraling ?tuition and fees and crushing student debt.

Boston College, which charges more than $55,000 in tuition and other costs, will spend $90 million on need-based financial aid, a 6 percent increase. Northeastern University, where full price is $53,000, will dole out $188 million, up more than $30 million from two years ago. The state?s flagship campus, the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where in-state students pay $23,000, will distribute $60 million, almost double what it spent in 2008.

Nationally, financial aid to undergraduates has risen sharply, from $21.9 billion in 2007 to almost $30 billion last year, as colleges continue to vie for cost-conscious students and respond to the growing need for assistance among hard-pressed families.

?Schools are trying to make up the difference,? said Justin Draeger, president of the ?National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators. ?Even though more students are going to college, the amount of aid per student has gone up.?

Even as they increase overall financial aid, some are requiring certain students to chip in more.

Cornell University, after raising financial aid by nearly 20 percent annually since 2008, will begin next year to require students from families who earn more than $60,000 to take out loans and pay more of their work earnings. Currently, the threshold is $75,000.

MIT will require that students from families who make less than $75,000 a year contribute $6,000 a year toward the cost of their education, up from $4,400.

?It is a partnership,? said Betsy Hicks, who directs student financial services at MIT. ?It?s reasonable to expect students to do some working and borrowing.?

The Cambridge university, where base tuition and fees are $52,500 a year, will hand out more than $95 million in financial aid, a nearly 5 percent ?increase from last year. By reduc?ing aid to lower-income families, the school can help spread aid to more students, Hicks said. Many students qualify for federal financial aid, which can be used to pay their increased contribution.

College costs have come under sharp scrutiny this year, with President Obama saying he was ?putting colleges on ?notice? that regular tuition ?increases above inflation are not sustainable. Obama has called for increasing government aid to students, which critics say fuels tuition increases, and for linking federal assistance to a college?s success in containing costs.

Over the past decade, tuition at public four-year colleges ?increased at a rate 5.6 percent higher than inflation, substantially faster than the previous two decades. Total costs now average about $17,000, according to the College Board. ?Tuition at private four-year schools rose 2.6 percent beyond inflation over the same period, with average costs over exceeding $38,000.

As tuition has climbed, students are taking on more debt. College seniors who graduated in 2010 had an average of $25,250 in student loans, according to the Project on Student Debt. College debt now tops $1 trillion, prompting fears of a bubble akin to the one before the housing collapse.

Colleges, worried that financial constraints would keep students from enrolling, have responded by boosting financial aid substantially in recent years. At selective four-year private colleges, total financial aid has risen from $11,200 per student in 2008 to $13,400 last year, according to the College Board. At selective four-year public colleges, aid climbed from $1,110 per student to $1,380.

When expanded tax breaks for college expenses are taken into account, the net cost of attend?ing independent colleges has actually declined 4 percent since 2007, analysts say.

?When the recession hit, schools were really afraid that people just wouldn?t be able to afford it,? said Sandy Baum, a policy analyst for the College Board who studies college costs. ?There?s been a definite upward trend.?

Baum said raising tuition and aid has a psychological ?appeal as well. Families associate high tuition with quality, and financial aid makes them feel both wanted and savvy.

But others say the increased aid is undercut by tuition hikes, and that the cost of college is well beyond many families? means. Many states have scaled back support for public colleges, forcing them to raise tuition on struggling families.

As a result, students are graduating with substantial debt, not to mention uncertain job prospects, said Rich ?Williams, higher education ?advocate for US PIRG, a public interest group. Williams said the infusion of aid has helped stabilize college costs, but that many students are scared off by the high sticker price. Continued...

ECB could assume supervision in bank union - ECB's Demetriades

Common supervision of European banks, possibly by the European Central Bank, would help restore confidence and protect the financial system, ECB Governing Council member Panicos Demetriades was quoted on Sunday as saying.

German business newspaper Handelsblatt reported on Friday, citing European Commission sources, that the Commission would next month propose giving the European Central Bank supervision over all of the euro zone's major banks.

Demetriades, who is also governor of the Central Bank of Cyprus, told Cypriot newspaper Kathimerini in an interview the euro zone faced "unprecedented challenges" and such a banking union was expected to foster greater confidence in the bloc.

"Common supervision of banks of the EU, which possibly the ECB will have responsibility over, is expected to offer greater protection of deposits, restore confidence and better protect the financial system from risks," Demetriades was quoted as saying in its Sunday edition, according to an advance copy.

He said the European Commission was expected to disclose a more analytical proposal on September 11.

Follow us

European Union leaders agreed at the end of June to set up a single banking supervisor in Europe as a pre-condition to letting the euro zone's rescue funds directly inject cash into lenders, without lending to a government first.

It is part of a wider EU effort to stop the banking and euro zone debt crisis feeding each other.

Handelsblatt said the Commission envisaged national authorities supervising day-to-day business and the ECB only intervening where it saw "dangerous risks". Outside the euro zone, national banking supervisors would stay in charge of their banks, the paper reported.

Stefaan de Rynck, spokesman for Michel Barnier, the European commissioner for financial services who is drafting the proposal, said on Friday how the ECB would work with local regulators on the ground was still being fleshed out.

Cyprus was forced to seek a bailout from international lenders in June to help its second-largest bank, which has been badly damaged by exposure to Greece. The country was shut out of international capital markets more than a year ago, forcing it to go to its EU partners for aid.

Demetriades said he hoped a Cypriot financial bailout with the EU, the IMF and the ECB, known collectively as the "troika", could be brokered in September. Once in a bailout mechanism, Cypriot bonds would again be considered eligible as collateral used by banks in ECB refinancing operations, he said.

Cypriot sovereign paper ceased to be eligible in June, and after the world's third international ratings agency, Standard and Poor's, classified its bonds into the "junk" category.

Although Cyprus is primarily seeking aid to buffer banks, its bailout will also cover fiscal requirements.

Cyprus recorded its fourth straight quarter of economic contraction in the second quarter of 2012, bringing its annualised drop in growth to 2.3 percent.

"In my view, fiscal consolidation should be designed in line with measures to enhance growth, simply because without growth, deficits do not fall but, to the contrary - and despite any cuts in spending - could widen," Demetriades said.

Stock And Profit Investments ? Top 5 Stock Market Investing Basics

You?ve saved some money and you want to invest it in the stock market. You?ll first need to understand some stock market investing basics.

1) First and foremost the stock market is just a vehicle for achieving your financial dreams. You can use it to create an income to live on (great for those with no job such as the unemployed and retired), or you can use it to grow your money for some future expense such as your child?s college, your dream home, or even for your retirement.

2) Whichever way you choose to invest you?ll need a basic understanding of how stock market investing works. In the rawest sense, you are basically buying an ownership interest in a company. If that company does well so do you (and vice versa). When you buy a share you become a shareholder and are entitled to share in the profits (through dividends if the company pays them) and attend shareholder meetings where you can vote on company matters and be heard.

However, I doubt you want to become an investor in the stock market for those things. Most people invest because they want their money to grow for them and multiply. This certainly can be done and the stock market offers many ways, which brings us to rule 3 of our stock market investing basics.

3) When it comes to investing, you can invest in stock through a mutual fund, by yourself, or through the aid of a broker. Of these ways I recommend you invest on your own. No one will take care of your money as well as you will. Brokers love to recommend you move from one stock to another, because they make big commissions when you do. Mutual Funds rarely beat the markets because of rules placed on them. The only one you can count on is you, so learn to become a great investor.

4) This now brings us to rule 4 of my stock market investing basics, how do you know when you are a good investor? You use a benchmark, that?s how. The stock market offers many benchmarks but the three most popular are ?the Dow?, ?the NASDAQ?, and the ?S&P 500?. These are indexes whose prices are based upon the stocks they track. For example, the S&P 500 tracks 500 stocks. If those 500 stocks go up on average, the S&P 500 index goes up.

Your goal as an investor is to ?beat the market?. What that means is that your investing return should be greater than the return of the major indexes. It is in this way you can tell if you, are someone else, is a great investor. If someone says, ?I made 50% this year.? Don?t believe he is a great investor. While it may sound good, if the markets went up 80% that year, this guy did horrible and underperformed the market.

5) Risk vs. Reward. Every investment offers risk, the more risk you take, the more return you should get.
How much risk do you want to take? Risk comes in many sizes. For example, a penny stock has a much greater chance of being worth 0 than a big company such as Microsoft or Wal-Mart. However, a penny stock could easily rise 100%, 300%, or more.

While Microsoft will be safer than a penny stock, it is also much riskier if you put all your money in it and nothing else. For example if in one year Microsoft loses 50%, Wal-Mart goes up 10%, and Apple loses 10%, by investing in only Microsoft you lose 50%. However if you diversify and buy all three, your loss for the year is now only about 17%. As an investor you goal should be to first determine the risk you are willing to take and invest accordingly.

Case Study: What 66 Schools Would Cost This Family | The College ...

As I?ve said many times, students shouldn?t be applying to colleges unless they have a good idea of what those institutions will cost them. It?s easy to obtain these formerly elusive cost figures now that schools have installed net price calculators on their web sites.

Today I?m sharing the results from a mom (Lynne) who has used the net price calculators of dozens of schools that her bright daughter (Helen) may consider.

The family, which lives in the state of Washington, has a better chance of cutting its price because Helen is not limiting herself to certain types of schools or a particular geographic region. Her goal is to find a school where she is surrounded by students who love to learn. How refreshing is that?

What you see here is information about the family?s finances and Helen?s academic profile. Below that you?ll find the cost calculations for 66 schools.

Family?s Income & Assets

  • $150,000 combined income
  • $50,000 non-retirement assets
  • $200,000 home equity
  • $500 student assets
  • Parents in mid-fifties
  • One child will be in college with another two years behind

    Western Washington U.

Teenager?s Academics

  • 3.97 GPA (one B+)
  • 4 APs, (4s & 5s); 3 more senior year
  • 5 honors (wherever available)
  • 2nd & 3rd yr Spanish university-level classes
  • Approx #18 in class of 400. Many music classes (no honors available) probably brought that down.
  • Enjoys every subject but especially music and math/science.
  • 2 years in high school video production program; won several prizes but doesn?t want to go into show biz
  • ACT combined 32 (no prep);
  • SAT II: US History 740; Math II 790; Chem 800 ? will take SAT I in the fall.
  • Her PSAT in 10th & 11th grade was 214.? (Editor?s note: National Merit Scholarship range is usually between 210 to 215.)

Student?s Interests/Passions

  • Instrumental Music (three classes in three instruments this year; played in national festival; gives piano lessons)
  • Volunteering for trail building crews (five one-week long trips over the last three years
  • Teaching x-c skiing to kids ((fourth year coming up)
  • All things outdoorsy ? hiking/backpacking, biking, skiing, paddling.

We?ve got a good income now, but it?s doubled in the last couple of years so we don?t have a lot of retirement savings. So while we?re happy to pay for her college education, we don?t want to pay more than we have to! I am a little concerned about making sure the academics are adequate for her. Really though it sounds corny, her main interest is being surrounded by other students who love to learn.

Net Price Calculator Results for Helen

Bottom Line:

In summing up the results, Lynne noted that the less selective private college (as opposed to the private universities) and smaller state institutions were the most reasonably priced for her daughter. That?s something that I?ve been saying for a long time.

Schools without instantly recognizable brand names must work harder to attract students and that means providing merit awards. The sticker prices of these schools also are typically not as expensive. Less well-known schools in the South and Southeast (Hendrix, Milsaps, McDaniel)? and Midwest (St. Olaf, Cornell College, Beloit, Lawrence, Hope) that are on this list, for instance, have sticker prices that are $10,000 or more cheaper than the brand name schools.

In contrast, the most elite schools don?t have to worry about their prices, which is why these institutions are now bumping up against the $60,000 milestone.? While the most elite schools don?t provide merit aid to rich students, they will give need-based aid to students like Helen, whose family makes $150,000. A family in this income range can?t afford the published prices of the most costly schools.? Even with need-based aid, however, the elite private schools will still cost more than the schools that provide merit scholarships.

FYI, does anybody else find it outrageous that Brown University, for instance, would only knock $1,627 off its price.

If you have any observations about this list or topic, please share in the comment box below.

GOP lawmaker questions spending at VA conferences

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A Republican lawmaker is raising questions about spending at training conferences held in Florida last year by the Veterans Affairs Department that have prompted an internal investigation at the agency.

Rep. Jeff Miller, chairman of the House Veterans Affairs Committee, said the VA authorized $9 million for a series of conferences and said a preliminary investigation has found that planning trips for the conferences cost taxpayers thousands of dollars. He says VA employees reportedly received gifts including alcohol, concert tickets and spa treatments. Miller, who is from Florida, says VA officials had assured his committee earlier that oversight of spending was adequate.

The VA said in a statement that the conferences were for legitimate training purposes, but the VA's inspector general is looking into allegations of misconduct. VA spokesman Joshua Taylor said Monday the two conferences in question cost about $5 million.

While the IG investigates, the VA said it has taken action to remove purchasing authority of any employees in the work unit under investigation. VA Secretary Eric Shinseki also has directed an outside independent review of all training policies and procedures. The department also has directed ethics training for all VA personnel involved with the planning and execution of training conferences and recertification of contract specialists.

THE RACE: Romney may see an August bump, or two

Mitt Romney may get a boost from his choice of Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan as his running mate ? and also from the upcoming Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla.

That would be welcome to a campaign that saw slippage to President Barack Obama by several percentage points in polls before Saturday's Ryan announcement.

Positive bumps are common in presidential politics. But it's just as common for them to fade, sometimes quickly.

Sen. John McCain got a nice spike from his selection of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin followed immediately by an upbeat 2008 Republican convention in St. Paul, Minn. It allowed the GOP nominee to draw even with Obama in some polls heading into the fall campaign season.

But the gain was fleeting.

Controversy quickly arose over Palin's qualifications. And the ticket suffered from McCain's erratic response to September's financial meltdown, including his off-key claim that "all the fundamentals are fine."

Some polls show a divided initial response to Ryan's selection. They also suggest voters don't know much about him, despite his prominent role in Washington as the architect of conservative GOP budgets.

Both sides are now scrambling to define him for voters. Democrats paint a "right wing ideologue" whose budgets would gut Medicare and reward the wealthy with tax breaks at the expense of the middle class. Newly energized Republicans see him as a spirited champion of conservative values who would help rein in federal spending.

"If there is a bump, it's likely to be short-lived," said pollster Andy Kohut, president of the Pew Research Center, noting the Democratic convention closely follows the GOP one.

All four candidates campaigned Tuesday in battleground states.

Obama continued his bus trip across Iowa while Romney campaigned in Ohio. Ryan stumped in Colorado and Nevada, Vice President Joe Biden in rural southern Virginia.

Mysterious Louisiana sinkhole raises concerns of explosions and radiation

A nearly 400-foot deep sinkhole in Louisiana has swallowed all of the trees in its area and enacted a mandatory evacuation order for about 150 residences for fear of potential radiation and explosions.

The 400-square-foot gaping hole is in Assumption Parish, La., about 50 miles south of Baton Rouge.

The sinkhole sits in the middle of a heavily wooded space where it has consumed all of the soaring cypress trees that had been there. Flyover photos show some of the treetops still visible through the mud.

Authorities enacted a mandatory evacuation for between 100 and150 homes in the area, but most people have chosen to stay, according to the Mayor's Office of Emergency Preparedness. If any of the dangers seem to become more imminent, the order will be escalated to a forced evacuation.

While officials are not certain what caused the massive sinkhole, they believe it may be have ben caused by a nearby salt cavern owned by the Texas Brine Company.

After being used for nearly 30 years, the cavern was plugged in 2011 and officials believe the integrity of the cavern may have somehow been compromised, leading to the sinkhole.

On Thursday, Louisiana's Department of Natural Resources required that Texas Brine drill a well to investigate the salt cavern as soon as possible, obtain samples from the cavern and provide daily reports on their findings. It could take up to 10 days to set up the drilling process, even with an expedited process.

"We have to arrange for the driller. We have to pick a location. We have to be very careful to not be in a point that's too close to the sinkhole because of the weight of the rig," Texas Brine Company spokesman Sonny Cranch told ABCNews.com today. "We don't want to aggravate the situation."

The sinkhole is on the outside edge of the salt dome where this particular brine well is located.

"There are some indications that it very well may have been connected, but there's just indications," Cranch said. "There's nothing concrete that has connected the sinkhole to the cavern."

There was bubbling in the water and the sinkhole is near areas where there has been exploration for oil and gas in the past, which would make the presence of low levels of naturally occurring radioactive material (NORM) possible.

The state's Department of Environmental Quality said water samples from the sinkhole showed oil and diesel on its surface, but initial readings did not detect radiation.

In the days after the sinkhole opened up on Aug. 3, nearby Highway 70 was closed down because officials discovered that the sinkhole caused a 36-inch natural gas pipeline to bend and feared the possibility of an explosion, according to ABC News' Baton Rouge affiliate WBRZ.

"That's why the mandatory evacuation is going to stay on, because there is a risk for explosion," John Boudreaux of from Assumption Parish Emergency Preparedness said at a meeting with residents on Tuesday, WBRZ reported.

"We are determined to do everything we can to find the answer," president of Texas Brine Mark Cartwright told the residents.

Some community members were visibly frustrated with the situation and lack of answers.

"You can give us a straight answer because that's all we want," one woman said at the meeting. "We want to know when we can come home and be safe. Because you all go home after a days work. You're safe, but we're not."

Gov. Bobby Jindal issued a declaration of emergency allowing the Governor's Office of Homeland Security to assist in the efforts if necessary.

"This is extremely serious and it's been going on for too long to still be at this point," Kim Torres, spokeswoman for the Office of Emergency Preparedness, told ABCNews.com today. "The people are very aware of how serious this is."

Asia stocks rise as US jobs picture improves

(AP) ? Asian stock markets rose sharply in early trading Monday, boosted by stronger-than-expected U.S. hiring figures for July following three months of weak job gains.

A weekend statement by the People's Bank of China indicating it would intensify policy fine-tuning also helped investment sentiment by raising hopes for more monetary easing, analysts said.

"It seems that policy focus in China has indeed shifted quite dramatically towards supporting growth," Dariusz Kowalczyk at Credit Agricole CIB in Hong Kong said in a market commentary.

Japan's Nikkei 225 index rose 1.8 percent to 8,706.85 while Hong Kong's Hang Seng index rose 2.1 percent to 20,071.95. South Korea's Kospi added 2 percent to 1,885.69 and Australia's S&P ASX/200 was 1.3 percent higher at 4,257.30. Benchmarks in Singapore, Taiwan and the Philippines also rose.

Stocks finished sharply higher on Wall Street on Friday after the government said the U.S. added 163,000 jobs last month, a turnaround following three months of sluggish hiring. Between April and June, the economy added an average of just 75,000 jobs a month compared with 226,000 jobs per month in the first three months of the year. The Dow Jones industrial average rose 1.7 percent to close at 13,096.17. The Standard & Poor's 500 rose 1.9 percent to 1,390.99. The Nasdaq composite index rose 2 percent to 2,967.90.

Still, recent job gains weren't enough to bring down the unemployment rate, which rose to 8.3 percent from 8.2 percent in June.

On Friday, Asian stock markets fell after the European Central Bank's policy meeting failed to deliver on bold promises of action to overcome the region's prolonged debt crisis. Investors had hoped the ECB would resume purchases of government bonds to lower the borrowing costs of financially struggling countries such as Spain and announce other measures to calm a crisis that is dragging down global economic growth.

But Germany, which is Europe's biggest economy, is opposed to the ECB operating outside its mandate to control inflation and wants any government bond purchases to be financed by other funds set up to deal with the crisis.

Benchmark crude was down 18 cents at $91.22 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose $4.27 on Friday to settle at $91.40 in New York. In London, Brent crude was down 53 cents at $108.41 on the ICE Futures exchange.

In currencies, the euro rose to $1.2403 from $1.2377 late Friday in New York. The dollar fell to 78.35 yen from 78.59 yen.

John Niyo's postcard from London: Rain and sun and rain ... it's the UK

I'm truly havin' a laugh ? as British comedian Ricky Gervais would say ? watching the weather every morning on the BBC in London.

Here's how it works: They show the map of the United Kingdom, and as they scroll up and over and back down, from Ireland to Northern Ireland to Scotland and finally to the London area, the weatherman rambles on about "periods of sun" and "scattered showers" while providing no discernible timetable for either.

It has been the same exact forecast every day for the last week, as best I can tell.

But the best part is the guy sounds wholly unconcerned about any of it, unlike the dramatic TV weather back home. It's as if this fellow knows he's wasting his time, and yours. This is an island in the ocean at the mercy of the jet stream, after all.

And, everyone in London with half a brain is going to head outside with sunglasses, an umbrella and a coat, expecting to use any of the three ? or all of them ? at a moment's notice.

Consequently despite the fact that you might find the costs of your low priced world-wide-web web hosting firm delightful, you are likely to eventually transform the choice absent from the assumption that a far more steeply-priced host will provide you with you far better services in the long run.

As said previous to, although, this is not an intelligent assumption to generate. It is always accurate that, basically, the world that you?re going to mostly locate low-priced internet hosting in is often a shared server. Shared servers are people which happen to be all depending on one particular server, but have their assets break up around most of the consumers of that server. Its since the sources (and for that reason, the costs) of such servers are break up up in between numerous web sites they are likely to operate significantly significantly more cheaply than the usual focused server would.

A large number of individuals refuse the concept of functioning their web-site over a shared server, while. They insist that a committed server would be the only way that their homepage can sustain the bottom of holiday makers that their webpage often obtain. Focused servers make available the homeowners of that place to build and change world-wide-web information to their satisfying ? in contrast to on shared servers, program utilized to function the server could in fact be edited, as can a variety of other aspects. These online sites also are inclined to load a good deal a little more quickly- building it greater probably that individuals will just want to drop by your web site. Really, it is rather attainable for an individual, as a result of thorough homework, to search for cost-effective internet hosting for your focused server. All you?ll have to do is wait and see ? find out by yourself a high quality listing that may help you track down these kind of servers. Most significantly, while, keep in mind: though the desire among a shared server and committed server could possibly be distinction between human being and man or woman, this doesn?t suggest which the fine quality of 1 is inferior into the other. They merely serve distinctive functions. Irrespective of which kind of server you desire to to operate your website on, don?t forget that spending a minimal every month or annually cost for the online internet hosting services can be done.

The very first a single stands out as the homepage alone and then the other often is the online host that should make your web site to choose from to on line people. Your web site need to start looking qualified professional but could even be straightforward plenty of to navigate due to. In regards to world wide web internet hosting, the support company ought to have the capacity to be sure that your internet site is functioning ninety nine.9% with the time.

One can find various forms of web hosting around. Samples of internet internet hosting are no cost internet site hosts, shared web page hosts, digital non-public servers, and devoted hosts. When considering internet marketing business web pages internet hosting, on the list of down sides is the fact that you do not have large amount of opportunities to select from. You must be sure that your website host can give the necessities of the web site specially concerning bandwidth, disk house, and memory. A different drawback of organisation web page web hosting is always that it will eventually certainly incorporate towards the expenditures of one?s corporation. Apart from the fee of internet hosting expert services, additionally, you will might need another person to handle and keep the server until that you are a professional in relation to technique conduite then you certainly can deal with it by by yourself.

Internet marketing business online pages as a rule have a few possibilities on the subject of internet hosting. They could choose a shared internet hosting, a committed world-wide-web internet hosting, or even a digital personal server (VPS) internet hosting. Shared internet hosting stands out as the most affordable between all about three selections. A number of online site homeowners break up the fee of your shared online host but sharing an individual server may cause it to become unstable and protection could perhaps even be compromised. Committed word wide web web hosting will be the most costly however, you reach have substantial bandwidth, disk area, and memory. It happens to be also extraordinarily secure and protection seriously isn?t things to fret about. A less expensive different to committed web site web hosting is VPS internet hosting. So Just What Is Disease? A Grand Unified Theory | Zero To Hero TV ...

Post date:

So Just What Is Disease? A Grand Unified Theory

Does the common use of the word ?disease? bypass critical reasoning to effectively mislead scientific thought?? Modern medicine describes hundreds of individual ?diseases.?? Each ?disease? is generally named for a group of symptoms and the area of the body affected. Many are suffixed by -itis, meaning inflammation of? like tonsill-itis or arthr-itis.? And interestingly, recent studies are finding inflammation involved in virtually all of them.? Does this terminology serve to pigeonhole distinct ?diseases? and?distract us from seeing the big picture of inflammation as the disease?? Have we been looking at secondary pathologies and opportunistic microbes, and treating them at symptom-level? instead of addressing a common root cause??Is there some imaginary partition that separates human health from chemistry, physics and cell biology?

Whether inflammation is acute like appendicitis or chronic like atherosclerosis and obesity, an immune response is taking place.?In-flam-mation literally means ?on fire? and is classically marked by the Latin: rubor, tumor, calor and dolor ? or redness, swelling, heat and pain ? so we know from those words that oxidation is at work.

Oxidation is simply fire or rust or whenever one molecule seizes an electron from another molecule. The needy oxidant grabs or shares the electrons of an electron rich anti-oxidant. When the electrons are stolen from chemical bonds, those molecules (like DNA) come apart or are deformed (like fats) and said to be oxidized, burnt.

Inflammation does not just happen; a bacterium or toxin or some other irritant triggers an immune response. The ammunition used by the body for immune firefights is singlet oxygen, an all-purpose defensive weapon. With an unpaired electron, an oxygen radical is a powerful oxidant.

It can deconstruct and destroy pathogens, poisons, cell debris and other unwanted substances, molecule by molecule, by snatching the electrons that hold them together.?Immune cells initiate the conflagration, armed with mini-flamethrowers that generate oxidative bursts of singlet oxygen to burn the area clean.

Mounting an oxidative immune response is dependent on the strength of the body?s electrochemical charge, which in turn hinges on a delicate balance between oxidants/acids (both electron-hungry) and?overall body charge.?(This charge is generated in mitochondria and at fluid/membrane interfaces. It is stored in fatty membranes, ?anti-oxidant? molecules and water, and even flows from the Earth itself. Charge is transmitted via nerves and connective tissue meridians. If a potato can generate electricity, so can your body!)?In the end, it is the electrochemical charge terrain that determines biochemical reactions, molecular integrity and health.

An oxidative immune response must be powered with, and yet contained by, abundant electrons, or damage will result to the cells it is designed to protect. To halt inflammation, the cause of the immune response needs to be removed, and then the flames of the defensive assault itself must be extinguished so charge can rise to normal and cells can be repaired or replaced.

So if we equate disease to inflammation, and understand that inflammation is oxidation, then we can understand that the common denominator of ?disease? is oxidative stress ? chronic unrelenting ?fire? ? loss of electrons,?DNA dysfunction, and molecular and cellular deterioration.

Nearly undetectable low-level oxidative stress takes place even in healthy individuals and has become a focus of longevity research. Some of the most promising studies are concerned with the integrity of telomeres and mitochondrial membranes that take a beating, being at the center of metabolic oxidation and electron energy production. Fatty cell and mitochondrial membranes are prone to destruction when improper fats are consumed ? making an All-American low-fat, high-glycemic, high-grain-carb/sugar/vegetable oil diet a train-wreck in progress.

Impaired membranes cannot transport oxygen or other substances to the cell, nor can they hold electron charge. These conditions bring disease, invite pathogens, cause cells to revert to cancerous anaerobic state, and eventually lead to cell death by suffocation. Undamaged Omega fats and varied saturated fats like butter and coconut oil are essential; crooked hydrogenated/oxidized/trans-fats/easily-oxidized polyunsaturated oils and a grain-based diet kill.

So are there individual ?diseases? or just varied symptoms of inflammation expressing at the weakest seams in the boat ? the points of nutritional inadequacy, sites of infection, trauma or toxic metal concentration or areas of circulatory stagnation, low charge and poor oxygenation? It all depends on how you look at it ? on what level causes are sought.

We need oxygen to produce energy (electrons) and we need (electron) energy to deliver oxygen to mitochondria as a basic necessity of life. When net electron charge falls below optimum levels, oxygen/energy needs are unmet, inner balances shift toward acidity, hypoxia, oxidative stress, inflammation ? and there is your disease.

What to do? Examine the three major areas of concern: nutrition, toxins/radiations and emotional states/lifestyle choices.

Nutrition can easily be divided into acid-forming and alkalizing food groups. A healthy balance favors alkalinity since acids rob electrons and charge. Processing strips electrons from foods. Fats are critical to membrane construction, should be consumed in pristine un-oxidized form and should be protected by fat-soluble antioxidants like Vitamins A, D, E and K and astaxanthin. Nutrition includes pH buffering electrolyte minerals like potassium and magnesium, and enzyme/hormone essentials like zinc, selenium and iodine, all of which are egregiously deficient across the population.

Nutrition also feeds gut bacteria and determines populations. These symbiants are there for our benefit and deserve respect.

Nutrients can be rated on the ORAC scale (oxygen radical absorbance capacity), so high ORAC means high electron content, antioxidant power.?Look at cayenne and oregano, and small red beans and pecans, and direct your choices accordingly.

Nutrition is like the list of parts for a car: you need them all, and then to make it all work, the battery must have strong voltage. To make your biochemistry and DNA work, you need volts, too!

Toxins, metals and radiation all have one thing in common: they steal charge by generating oxidizing free radicals.? They also trigger an immune response that brings inflammation. Detox! Organic toxins can be destroyed by oxidation. Pathogen attractive positively-charged metals can be reduced, mobilized and excreted by raising charge, supplementing proteolytic enzymes and supplying chelators like chlorella. Radiation damage can be prevented or ameliorated with antioxidant electrons that scrub free radicals formed of damaged cell molecules.

The mind is like the computer in the car. It monitors and adjusts internal conditions while the conscious part in the driver?s seat sets the tone of being. When the mood is chronically fearful, internal conditions deteriorate. When spirits are sunny and loving, your cells sing and your lifestyle choices become proactive ? especially with healthy meals, exercise, breathing and physical activity at beneficial levels.

Check previous articles like ?Healer?s Toolbox? for some of the substances that work if employed correctly and quantitatively, giving this approach a practical validity and logic.? To reverse disease, the sources of inflammation must be oxidized/burned/removed and then the flames of inflammation snuffed out by an overwhelming electron boost to restore charge/voltage to operational levels and obtain sufficient oxygen to generate more charge and reverse damage. Hundreds of specific vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients, enzymes, amino acids and fats have proven useful in studies covering a wide range of maladies ultimately boosting body voltage and returning internal conditions to viable parameters.

Perhaps we should reevaluate the words at the foundation of health science. What if ?diseases? are just symptoms? What if disease is simply inflammation, weak voltage?-oxidative stress? Maybe an artful and quantitative application of these forbidden principles should be at the foundation of healing.
