LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Arnold Schwarzenegger says his wife, Maria Shriver, was told to "snap out of it" by her mother for her attempts to persuade him against running for California governor in 2003, a conversation that ultimately opened the door to his successful candidacy.
Eunice Shriver told her daughter that her husband would be "angry for the rest of his life" if she stopped his ambitions, Schwarzenegger writes in his new autobiography, "Total Recall: My Unbelievably True Life Story."
The former governor says in the book that he had decided against running to recall Gov. Gray Davis after his wife implored him not to for the sake of their family. Maria Shriver announced his decision to their four children.
But he writes that when Maria Shriver told her mother about her efforts to thwart Schwarzenegger's political ambitions, Eunice told her daughter that women in their family "always support the men when they want to do something." Schwarzenegger says he didn't know about the conversation at the time, but learned of it later.
Maria Shriver then softened her stance, paving the way for Schwarzenegger to announce his candidacy on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," where he says he felt most comfortable.
The announcement came after a week of wavering. Schwarzenegger says before he headed to the TV appearance, his wife handed him two pieces of paper with talking points she had written: one in case he decided to run, another in case he decided not to.
He writes that Shriver went on to become a key ally and adviser to his campaign and eventual governorship.
Schwarzenegger has often said that Maria's mother and her father, Sargent Shriver, were essential to his eventual decision to seek public office, and the most "extraordinary human beings I've ever met." But he also writes in the book that he often teased his wife that the close-knit Democratic Kennedy clan was "like a bunch of clones" because there was such conformity among them.
A spokesman for Shriver, Matthew DiGirolamo, declined to comment on the contents of the book.
"Total Recall" will officially be published next week. The Associated Press purchased an early copy.
The book is part of an effort by the onetime "Mr. Universe" and Hollywood action star to rebrand himself after leaving office with a mixed record and subsequent embarrassing revelations about a fling he had with the family's housekeeper. Schwarzenegger, who fathered a son with the housekeeper, says he also let the boy down.
Schwarzenegger, 65, said he avoided telling his wife for years about the boy, who is now a teenager, even when Shriver asked him, partly because of his longtime penchant for secrecy, and his fear that the news would become public and undermine his political career. He told his wife in January 2011, when she confronted him the day after he left office.
In an interview with "60 Minutes" scheduled to air Sunday, Schwarzenegger said having sex with his housekeeper was "the stupidest thing" he ever did to his now-estranged wife and caused great pain to her and their four children. CBS aired excerpts of the interview Friday.
"I think it was the stupidest thing I've done in the whole relationship. It was terrible. I inflicted tremendous pain on Maria and unbelievable pain on the kids," Schwarzenegger tells "60 Minutes."
Schwarzenegger says he also let down the son he fathered with the housekeeper.
Shriver filed for divorce in July.
In his book, the usually ebullient Schwarzenegger admits to some loneliness, even though he packed his schedule with speeches, projects and movie-making after Shriver and the children moved out of the house. He said his career had been fun for 30 years because he shared it with Maria.
They had done everything together, he writes.
The former GOP governor also writes about a 2003 White House meeting with Karl Rove in which the top GOP strategist told him the recall would not happen and instead introduced the actor to then-national security adviser Condoleezza Rice as his pick to run for California governor in 2006.
Schwarzenegger felt snubbed.
He asks, "How could Rove have been so wrong?"
Rove's office said he was traveling Friday and could not be reached for comment.
Rice's chief of staff at Stanford University, Georgia Godfrey, said Rice cannot recall "any conversation on this subject."
"She has stated many times in the past that she has no desire to run for public office and those sentiments have still not changed," Godfrey said in a statement emailed to The Associated Press.

While Iran?s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu traded verbal jabs at the United Nations General Assembly this week over the threat of Iran?s nuclear capability, one thing is for sure: international economic sanctions against Iran are having an impact.?
The United States, European Union and the U.N. have imposed tough economic sanctions against Iran, blocking access to the international banking system and curbing sales of Iranian crude oil as a way to persuade Tehran to abandon its nuclear program.
As Ali Arouzi, NBC News Tehran Correspondent, reports today, the sanctions have had a real impact on Iranians as the value of their currency, the rial, continues to drop daily ? affecting everything from basic food items to manufacturing.
Iranian: 'Our money is becoming more and more worthless every day'
Ali answered reader questions about the impact of the sanctions in Iran earlier today.

Kevin Millwood pitched decently for the Mariners this this season before a sore shoulder put an early end to things this month, but the impending free agent told Greg Johns of MLB.com yesterday that he?s not sure whether he wants to come back for another season.
?I?m going to go home and just relax and play with my kids and see what happens, see how I feel and see what pops into my head,? Millwood said Friday. ?I don?t have any definite plans right now on next year, but I?m sure at some point in the offseason it?ll hit me on what I want to do.?
?I knew I wanted to play this year,? he said. ?But like I said, now I?m just trying to figure out physically if I can do it. I still definitely believe I can get people out, but whether it?s time to stay home and spend more time with my kids or try it again, I don?t know the answer to that yet.?
Millwood signed a minor league deal with the Mariners last offseason and made the team out of spring training. The 37-year-old right-hander ended up posting a 4.25 ERA and 107/56 K/BB ratio over 161 innings in 28 starts. And he wasn?t just a Safeco Field creation either, as his ERA was only slightly higher on the road (4.35) than it was at home (4.15). Still, it?s unlikely any team will give him much of a guarantee at this point, so he?s understandably thinking about whether it?s worth trying to put his body through another season.
Millwood has a 169-152 record and a 4.11 ERA over 16 major league seasons. While he has averaged an unspectacular 6.9 K/9 for his career, he ranks 59th all-time with 2,083 strikeouts. He is the active leader in strikeouts among right-handed pitchers.

ABERDEEN, S.D. (AP) ? It's a Friday night on Main Street in the small northern South Dakota town of Aberdeen, and it's supposedly a hopping one with the marquee event of the annual South Dakota Film Festival being held at the historic Capitol Theater.
And yet, the street is nearly empty. The chirping of crickets is only occasionally disturbed by passing cars or pedestrians. Cannes or Sundance, this is not.
Some might consider it an unfortunate side effect of being, well, in the middle of nowhere in South Dakota, in a town hugged by corn fields and the closest "big cities" ? Fargo, Bismarck, Sioux Falls and Pierre ? each being about three hours away.
But Tom Black doesn't see it that way.
"We're not the middle of nowhere. We're the middle of everywhere," said Black, a co-producer of the South Dakota Film Festival, which this weekend is in its sixth year.
Looking at a map, he's just about right. As long as film goers don't mind that cattle outnumber local residents, Aberdeen is pretty close to being smack dab in the middle of the country.
And it's that central location that has grown the small-town festival into a filmmakers' favorite, consistently drawing hundreds of people into the quaint-but-spacious theater each of the event's four days.
It's gotten so big, in fact, that organizers said they might need to spread to other downtown locations in the next year or two.
"It's charming here. It's a great theater," said Mike Scholtz, 42, of Minnesota, whose latest documentary "Wild Bill's Run" has won awards at both the South Dakota and Seattle film festivals. The "arctic crime caper" also has been accepted into the better-known Mountain Film Festival in Canada's Banff, Alberta.
"A lot of festivals are in hotel conference rooms, or just spaces that aren't as nice for film watching. This is a really nice space for it," Scholtz said.
Indeed, the Capitol Theater is the stuff of theatres past. Inside the lobby is an ornate chandelier and restored 1920s organ. The theater itself is adorned with turn-of-the-century embellishments and balcony seating. The screen pulls down over a true stage, one that's used for live performances by the Aberdeen Community Theatre.
It's a space Penny Stolsmark of Pierpont, S.D., has known since childhood ? but Friday marked the first time she and her husband have visited for the film festival.
"We had to come. We've never been to this before, but we always wanted to," Stolsmark said. "We're big moviegoers. I'm thinking if we really like it tonight, we might VIP it next year."
What drew Stolsmark to this year's festival wasn't a new film, but rather one celebrating its 20th anniversary: "Thunderheart" starring Val Kilmer and Native American actor Graham Greene. Greene is arguably best known for his role in another South Dakota-filmed movie, "Dances With Wolves," for which he was nominated for a best supporting actor Academy Award.
The showing, followed by a question-and-answer period with Greene, was to be one of the festival's highlights.
Saturday is to feature a preview of upcoming films made in South Dakota, a six-minute silent flick called "Bus 1107," a horror film called "Werewolf in a Girls Sorority," and what Black describes as this year's big get: "Butter," a film starring Jennifer Garner that won't be widely released until Oct. 5.
And that's just a sampling. About 100 filmmakers entered their works; about half of those were accepted, organizers said. Many of the films have cast or crew from the Upper Great Plains.
"We'll tear about 1,000 tickets over the course of the weekend," Black said.
Scholtz, who made his first film in 1997, said Aberdeen ? population 27,000 ? will continue to lure him because it's a "filmmakers' festival."
"Everyone in the film community in the Midwest is aware of the festival," he said. "Average people won't have heard of it, but they have a really good reputation with filmmakers."
Black said that while the festival is heavy on Great Plains artists, it also draws filmmakers from Florida, Washington state, Washington D.C., and the rest of the country. People don't just love showing their work in South Dakota, he said, they like making it here, too.
Not only does the state offer the picturesque landscape that made "Wolves" star Kevin Costner a lifelong fan, but it's cheap for film workers, Black said. South Dakota doesn't have the income tax, union labor or hefty sales tax of some other states, he said.
"You may think Chicago isn't the middle of nowhere, but it takes a lot longer to get to Chicago for most people," Black said. "We're actually the perfect place."

Onswipe has released a study revealing that the iPad accounts for nearly all web traffic originating from tablets.
The study found that Apple?s tablet represented 98.1 per cent of 29.5 million unique impressions over 1200 sites from September 13th ? 20th 2012.
The iPad stormed into first place with a huge margin between itself and second place winner Samsung Galaxy Tab, which got a mere 1.53 per cent.
Motorola?s Xoom managed only 0.21 per cent of tablet-based traffic, Amazon?s Kindle Fire came fourth with 0.11 per cent and Asus tablets made up only 0.6 per cent of traffic.
Onswipe?s results reveal that iPad users spent 56.9 per cent more time per web surfing session that iPhone owners. iPad?s 54.5 per cent share of total mobile web traffic is more than double the iPhone?s share of 19.05 per cent.
Apple?s iOS owns 75.12 per cent of total mobile content consumption across Onswipe?s monitored network, with Android taking 22.3 per cent and all others having just 2.5 per cent of the market.

This past July, Nokia (NOK) stunned Wall Street by increasing feature phone unit sales in the spring quarter by 2.7 million over the previous quarter. Markets had expected feature phone sales to decline by between 2 and 4 million units, and the resulting short squeeze drove the share price up by more than 70%.?Last night, Research In Motion (RIMM) pretty much repeated the trick: it sold 7.4 million BlackBerry smartphones while Wall Street had anticipated 6.9 Million units. RIM was up 12% after the first trading hour on Friday, eerily similar to Nokia?s 16% first-hour pop the day after its July report.
What this all demonstrates is how bad Wall Street is evaluating the emerging market trends ? particularly Brazil, Africa, Middle East and South-East Asian markets like Malaysia and Philippines. Analysts have a pretty good grip on U.S., Western European and Chinese sales trends thanks to close tracking of retail sales in those markets. But tracking sales in markets like Nigeria or Malaysia is much harder, and nobody has really bothered to construct a solid tracking system in those countries.
As a result, Wall Street has a collective blind spot for emerging market trends. Many look at U.S. and European trends and then simply extrapolate from them, which is a very bad idea indeed.
Nokia pulled off its spring surprise with a new line of dual-SIM models featuring slick designs and some very low-end camera and display specifications. RIM?s surprise was built on the combination of tolerable sales of newish Curve and Bold models and the astonishing longevity of the ancient Curve 8520, a phone that was announced way back in 2009. Nobody would even dream of touching those phones in New York or San Francisco, so analysts were essentially blinded by their focus on local, American high-end trends.
Of course, neither Nokia or RIM is saved by their summer success in Bangalore and Lagos. But evaluating the volume trends of these companies is a whole lot trickier than Wall Street would have you believe.

More often than not, businesses lack a formal content calendar for platforms such as social media, blogs, websites, etc. Typically businesses either don?t understand the purpose and value of a content calendar, they don?t have the in-house resources to create and manage this calendar, or both. The consequence results in last minute scrambling to put content out there just for the sake of having an online presence.
A successful content marketing plan should be well-thought out and strategic. Sporadic communication can actually do more harm than good. By not communicating regularly and providing valuable, relevant content, you risk losing your band of followers and ?fans.?
An experienced, strategic-minded marketing partner can help educate businesses on the importance of a content calendar as well as what goes in to creating and implementing one.
In addition to being reviewed and updated at least once a quarter, a content calendar should include:
While it?s necessary to talk about news and events as they happen, having a content calendar gives your business something to talk about during the down times. This in turn keeps your communication lines open, consistent and relevant.
Does your business currently have a strategic content calendar in place? Has your business been recently struggling with regular communication? We can help! Contact us today.

One of my favorite e-mails to receive is one containing the words, ?Could we send you a book to review on your self help blog?? Beautiful words to this book lover ? absolutely beautiful.? More times than not, if someone offers you a book to read and review, the book will be great. People with so-so or even bad books don?t seek reviewers. Why would they?!
Finding Your Way Back to You by Lynne Saint is a very special little book.? Very. It takes real talent to pack so much information, motivation, and inspiration into a mere 141 pages. I?ve read books 4 times as long that didn?t leave even half the impact this fun-to-read and even funner to live book does.
From the Back Cover:
Are you at a crossroads in life, lacking in motivation, looking for a new direction, or just plain ?stuck??
Finding your Way back to YOU is a practical resource written specifically for women who have found themselves in any of these positions.
Written by Lynne Saint ? experienced Life Coach, NLP Practitioner and Hypnotherapist ? this is a hands-on book with an accompanying downloadable journal and weblinked exercises.
Lynne?s straight-talking guidance, drawn from Coaching, Neuro Linguistic Programming and Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, will help you to change your behaviour, and motivate and support you throughout your personal journey of self-discovery. This book will help you to develop and achieve the goals that you have dreamed of.
This book is written to and for women because we are the ones who are most in danger of ?losing ourselves.?? We wear so many different titles in life?
We?re supposed to be, literally, ALL THINGS TO ALL PEOPLE. Whether we?re caring for aging parents, raising small children, trying to make ends meet financially, or simply trying to be the best wife and mother we can be ? we very often neglect something that?s just as important: Trying to be the best us we can be!
That?s where this wonderful, upbeat, and inspiring book comes in. The words, quotes, and exercises cause you to think? I mean really think? and that?s the point.? We can?t hope to reunite with our true self if we fail to realize she?s missing.
Here?s a scenario most of us are familiar with:? When we were teenagers, and even into our early 20?s, we wouldn?t be caught dead in public (especially in front of that special someone) without just the right clothes on, our hair done, make-up perfect, perfume in place, and nails looking NICE.? Fast forward a little bit.? Add a child or two or three to the picture.? There?s laundry to do, bathrooms to clean, meals to cook, a family to care for ? often on top of working.
Nail polish? Perfume? Ha!
We tend to lose ourselves in all the chaos and chores.? We become someone?s mother, someone?s wife, someone?s grandmother,? someone?s employee?. I did something alarming one time which, quite frankly, served to wake me up.? As I sat at home on the couch one night, in sweatpants and a huge t-shirt with my hair a hot mess, I wondered, ?What would the 18 year old me think if she?d looked into the future and saw this??
My initial reaction: She?d cry!? To say that I was all about looking my best when I was a teenager would be the biggest understatement in the world.? I was always armed with extra nail polish, perfume, make-up, and even a spritzer bottle I kept filled with scented water to spray on my naturally curly hair.
Scented!? I honestly added a little of my favorite AVON fragrances to this ?miracle water? (Sweet Honesty until I graduated to Soft Musk).
We tend to lose track of the real us ? the one who wants to look, feel, and be her best. Sadly, many women allow their dreams to die because they become so preoccupied with helping others live their dreams.
?You aren?t going to change your unique personality, and neither should you want to, but the new skills you will learn in (Finding Your Way Back to You) will give you the awareness to manage your traits to become your best and most successful self.? - Page 2
How committed are you to your marriage?
How committed are you to your children?
How committed are you to your parents?
How committed are you to your job?
How committed are you to your home?
Now, the tough question. How committed are you to you?
Finding Your Way Back to You isn?t just a book, it?s a journey. That may sound very self-helpish and it may be dripping in ?guru juice,? but it?s true in every sense of the word.? You don?t simply read and discard Finding Your Way Back to You, you WORK and GROW through the book.? You take a journey and the destination is the you that you dreamed of being when you were 18.
As you read the book, you can find free worksheets that?ll help you along your journey.? You can download them on the publisher?s website.
Finding Your Way Back to You is available on UK?s Amazon in paperback, but on our Amazon (USA) I can only find it as a Kindle Edition. If you have a Kindle, this is awesome news for you because the Kindle edition of Finding Your Way Back to You is only a couple of dollars!
One way or another, just get your hands on Finding Your Way Back to You!? This is the sort of book you?ll pass around to every female you know.? I can?t wait for my daughters to read it ? I think it?ll keep them form ever ?losing? any part of themselves.
What better gift could a mother give her girls?!
?It?s never too late to be what you might have been.? - George Elliott, Author

Clarksville, TN ? In the spring of 2006, Austin Peay State University?s literary journal, Zone 3, published the poem, ?Sway This Night,? by Pittsburgh native Helena Mesa. That work is now part of Mesa?s acclaimed new collection, ?Horse Dance Underwater,? which former Maryland Poet Laureate Michael Collier called a ?virtuosic first book? that leaves readers ?breathless, exhilarated and transformed.?
At 4:00pm on October 11th, Mesa will deliver a reading of her work at the APSU Honors Commons as part of the University?s Fall Visiting Writer?s Series. A book signing will follow the event, which is free and open to the public.
Mesa, the daughter of Cuban parents, grew up in Pittsburgh but later earned her Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Maryland. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Houston, and her poems have appeared in major literary journals, such as Third Coast, Indiana Review, Barrow Street and Poet Lore.
?Mesa?s poems are artfully suspended between lyric and narrative, between humans and animals, between Latin America and the U.S., between desire and the difficult of its fulfillment,? Guggenheim fellow and National Book Award-winning poet Mark Doty said. ??Horse Dance Underwater? is an inventive, musical and powerful debut.?

? This past week has brought some bad news for people who like to buy their genetically modified corn at Wal-Mart. The research results are in from the first-ever peer reviewed long-term study of genetically engineered food that has been published in the journal Food and Chemical Toxicology. For two years, researchers had fed rats with a diet of GM corn that is quite common in the US food supply. The rats that survived were found to have massive mammary tumors, kidney and liver destruction.
The Monsanto GM corn, labeled NK603, has been engineered to be resistant to Roundup, Monsanto?s weed killer. NK603 (GM corn) is designed to allow farmers to douse fields with the herbicide roundup without worrying about killing their own corn crops. The new long term study has found that rats fed a regular diet of GM corn or exposed to Roundup were more likely to develop tumors and die sooner. Previously, industry-funded studies have determined that GM corn is safe to eat. But those studies were much shorter-term, consisting of only 90 day trials.
The latest research, done in France, reveals that 50 percent of male rats and 70 percent of female rats fed Monsanto?s GM corn and weed killer died prematurely. The French government is sounding the alarm and is ?urging European government authorities to take necessary measures to protect human and animal health.? The Wall Street Journal has also sounded an alarm of a different sort. A large sell-off of Monsanto?s stock is expected to take place when the market opens this Monday.
The California?s Progress Report website states that the new ?research adds to the growing body of evidence that links genetically engineered foods to allergies, organ toxicity and other illnesses. These findings underscore the importance of giving California?s families the right to know whether our food has been genetically engineered in a laboratory.? Proposition 37 may not now be a proposition that can easily be disregarded by concerned voters
? A new study is concluding that chronic fatigue is not caused by a virus. Chronic fatigue syndrome affects about a million people in the United States. Women are more likely to have the disease where people suffer an unexplained fatigue which does not get any better with bed rest or medications. Not aware what was happening to them, patients found some relief or reassurance in the belief that it was some mysterious virus that was infecting them. Researchers from the U.S. National Institutes of Health, the U.S. CDC and Columbia University concluded that no known virus exists. Patients with chronic fatigue are not victims of a virus.
? People who cooked with a blend of sesame and rice bran oils saw a significant drop in blood pressure and improved cholesterol levels, according to new research presented at the American Heart Association?s High Blood Pressure Research 2012 Scientific Sessions. The researchers found cooking with a combination of these oils in a variety of ways worked nearly as well as a commonly prescribed high blood pressure medication. ?Rice bran oil, like sesame oil, is low in saturated fat and appears to improve a patient?s cholesterol profile,? said Devarajan Sankar, M.D.,Ph.D., and research scientist in Japan.
In a recent study of 300 people with moderately high blood pressure, those taking medication had their blood pressure drop 16 points. Those who consumed a diet of rice bran and sesame oil had their blood pressure drop by 14 points. Those using both diet and medication found even bigger drops in blood pressure.
? There was some surprising news about cranberry juice during the American Heart Association?s High Blood Pressure Research 2012 Scientific Sessions. In a study that measured the effects of drinking low-calorie cranberry juice, participants drank cranberry juice or a placebo drink every day for eight weeks as part of a controlled diet. After eight weeks, blood pressure values dropped a little for those drinking the cranberry juice daily. Previous studies have shown some promise for berry or pomegranate juices to lower blood pressure.
However, because an industry like Ocean Spray Cranberries, Inc. funded the study, the American Heart Association is distancing itself from the study and does not wish to take a position on whether cranberry juice is excellent for lowering blood pressure.

Has owning your home become the new retirement savings plan? According to recent statistics, more and more Canadians are investing in their home rather than their RRSP. While half of Canadians haven?t contributed to their registered retirement savings plan, close to 70 percent of households currently own their own home.
It?s an interesting shift, and one that could prove extremely beneficial to budget-savvy individuals. Jason Heath, a certified-financial planner with Objective Financial Partners Inc. explained the rationale in a recent Financial Post interview, stating that ?your money grows tax free? in your property, whereas RRSP savings feature fully-taxable withdrawals.
One of the biggest financial benefits of owning your own home is the fact that it forces you to save (granted, you?re not putting this money into a savings account, but rather putting it towards your mortgage payments). The discipline of mortgage payments forces individuals to invest in their future, even if they can?t make the same commitment to their retirement savings.
While this isn?t an argument to stop contributing to your RRSP, it?s still a point worth pondering. If you?re currently renting in order to save money, make sure you?re actually putting that extra cash into a savings account. If the cash you?re saving is burning a hole in your pocket, rather than growing in an RRSP, you?re not really benefiting from your arrangement.
Granted, there are some situations where owning your home doesn?t make sense. If you?re on a temporary work assignment, going to school, or retired and living the nomadic lifestyle, now might not be the best time to put down roots. However, if you?re planning to stay put for a while, taking out a best rate mortgage and investing in a home certainly has its perks.
Want to make the most of your investment? Then consider a home reno. Even though the market is volatile right now, there?s still plenty of reason to upgrade your home in order to add value. Here are a few reason why:

So why would you want to sell your structured settlement? Let's read more to get a better idea of what we mean.
Even though they are an excellent way of settling personal injury cases, structured settlements have few disadvantages. Before they are signed, they can have many different payment options.
These can be annual payments, monthly, bi-monthly, or any combination of the above.
You can even arrange for every tenth payment to be larger than regular ones, if you need to. In that sense, structured settlements are very flexible.
However, once signed, they are difficult to change.
This could be a problem in the future. Life does not always go as you plan it. You may find yourself in a situation where you need substantial amount of cash, whether is that down payment for a new home or college tuition. Sometimes the only solution is to sell your settlement to get a quick injection of income.
There are plenty of companies on the market that specialize in buying structured settlements. They all offer different terms so it is a good idea to ask around before selling.
The basic principle is the same with all of them. You sell your future income for the lump sum paid to you today.
If you have decided to sell, one thing must be clear to you, you will not get as much money as you would from your original settlement.
The difference between what you get and the amount of settlement is a profit margin for the company. Be careful when looking at your options. Is the difference worth getting your money today instead of in 5 or 10 years?
One other thing to consider is inflation. One hundred thousand dollars in 1980 is not the same value in 2010 or later. Money drops its value over time and the longer you wait, the more value you will lose. All these factors are important when deciding to sell your structured settlement and should be considered carefully.

Jimmy Carter waving at the 1976 Democratic National Convention in New York City.
Photo by Warren K. Leffler/Library of Congress.
If elected, Mitt Romney ?would arguably be the most actively religious President in American history,? according to a profile in the latest New Yorker. Who?s been our most religious president?
Jimmy Carter, probably. It?s impossible to know the contents of a man?s heart, but historians who study the religious lives of the presidents point again and again to the words and deeds of James Earl Carter Jr. The Georgia Baptist set a new standard during his 1976 presidential campaign when he described himself as ?born again,? and he was frank about his religious beliefs throughout his presidency. While in office, Carter attended church wherever he went, even while on the road, and continued to teach Sunday school when at home. He prayed daily and read the Bible, and when he wasn?t reading the Bible he read theologians like Reinhold Niebuhr. Like Romney, he also knocked on doors as a missionary, addressing potential converts by saying, ?I?m Jimmy Carter, a peanut farmer. Do you accept Jesus Christ as your personal savior?? Since his presidency he has continued his Christian mission on annual trips for Habitat for Humanity, and when he accepted the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize, he spoke of Jesus Christ as ?the Prince of Peace.? His Secret Service codename was ?The Deacon.?
President James A. Garfield.Library of Congress.
Prior to Jimmy Carter, the most God-fearing U.S. president may have been James Garfield. Garfield is the only president who was actually a clergyman. At a young age Garfield became a minister for the Disciples of Christ, where he was lauded for his skill as a preacher, and he learned Greek?the original language of the New Testament. Though it was not his full-time job, he continued to preach and minister for years until his presidency. When he left his position to become president, he said, ?I resign the highest office in the land to become President of the United States.? However, as Garfield only got to be president for six months before his death (he was assassinated by a religious zealot), there wasn?t much time for him to demonstrate divine pursuits while in office.
Other presidents who number among the most devout are the Methodist William McKinley, the Presbyterian Woodrow Wilson, and Unitarian John Quincy Adams. All of these men were fervent believers who attended church, prayed, and read the Bible regularly. Adams worshiped at three different churches (Unitarian, Presbyterian, and Episcopal) and would attend service even in heavy snow. He was also vice president of the American Bible Society and wrote religious poetry. During an 1846 debate over the Oregon territory (when he returned to Congress after his presidency), he cited the Book of Genesis. Abraham Lincoln is sometimes named among our most religious presidents, and indeed he had deep struggles with questions of religion. However, he did not widely profess his private believes and is known to have doubted the divinity of Jesus. Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama have been among the presidents to use the most religious rhetoric in their speeches, though this is partly due to the precedent set by Carter.
Bonus Explainer: Who was the least religious president? James Monroe or Ulysses S. Grant, perhaps?it?s difficult to say. There is little surviving evidence of Monroe?s religious beliefs, but what evidence there is suggests that from his 20s onward, Monroe wasn?t very religious and attended church infrequently. Grant seems to have refused to ever profess his faith, even when a bishop of his wife?s Methodist denomination pressed him on his deathbed. While Thomas Jefferson was called an atheist?he rejected the virgin birth, called the Book of Revelation the ?ravings of a maniac,? and described the Trinity as a ?hocus-pocus phantasm??in his private life he was still a religious man who went to church and prayed.

In fact, there is often more potential for profit in commercial properties than in residential properties. It can be difficult to find good opportunities. Here is some advice to assist you in making better informed decisions regarding commercial property investments.
If you?re a buyer or if you?re a seller, it?s important that you negotiate. Ensure that your voice is heard, and that you are offering-or receiving-a price that is fair for both parties.
Look for the opportunity to buy something big. Often, it is equally expensive to maintain either a small or large property. As a result, you are able to achieve an economy of scale.
TIP! If you are new to investing in real estate, spend some time surfing online resources that house information that seasoned investors use. It is wise to learn all you can, as it is impossible to know too much.
When considering commercial real estate, you should think about the importance of honing relationships with private investors. Remember that many properties sell before they can even be listed; therefore, a more complete network improves your chances of locating the best opportunities.
When you are writing up the letters of intent, keep it simple by going for agreement on the larger issues first and let the smaller issues wait for a later time in the negotiations. The negotiations will go much better and be less stressful if you keep the small stuff out of the way and can focus on the larger issues first.
TIP! If you desire commercial property for rental purposes, locate buildings that are simply yet solidly constructed. Because it is apparent that these types of structures have been kept in good condition, it greatly increases the chances that tenants will be quick to rent the space.
Before you make a large investment in real estate, take a look at local income levels, unemployment rates and the expansion or contraction of local employers. Homes that are located near schools, hospitals and other major employers are assigned a higher resale value.
One of the biggest concerns of people involved in commercial real estate is the rise and fall of interest rates. A bad economy can cause rates to rise and fall quickly, and investors find themselves unable to predict these tendencies. Always keep these rate fluctuations in mind while shopping for properties so you can understand the long-term impact of them on your purchase.
Have family, friends, and professional lenders partner with you to make sure you have enough cash to buy commercial real estate. Set up contracts which either allow you to repay the loans via a fixed interest rate, or give them a percentage of your income from the property.
TIP! Have your business needs in line before looking for commercial real estate! Define the type of office space your business needs. If you hope to expand your business, you may want to buy extra space to save time, money and effort in the long run, especially if it?s a buyer?s market at the time of your purchase.
One of the most critical considerations for valuing a commercial property is its physical location. Pay attention to the property?s surrounding neighborhood. Compare its growth to similar areas. By calculating growth in similar areas, you will be able to ascertain whether the piece of property you are looking at is going to continue growing.
When you are looking for a building for your business, size is very important. You want to invest into commercial property that has the potential to grow so that you don?t have to shop for you business again a few years down the line.
TIP! It?s likely that the property you buy will need some repairs and work before you move in. The space may be due for some regular maintenance, or it may need something as simple as a new coat of paint.
Always assure yourself of any company?s intentions, making sure they take a primary focus on your own needs, rather than an apparent consideration for only their firm?s income. If you don?t do your research and end up in bed with wolves, you will be the one to suffer.
Conduct tours of potential properties. Think about taking a contractor that?s a professional with you while you check out different properties. Once you have all the details, start drafting proposals and enter negotiations with the seller. Take your time and really explore your offers before you decide to buy or pass.
NOI, also known as Net Operating Income, is a crucial metric to understand in the world of commercial real estate dealings. To maximize your success, keep your numbers in the positive values.
TIP! Environmental problems can be an important issue. A large concern is when you currently own a property that has issues with hazardous waste.
After reading the article above, you should have a better grasp of the basics of investing in commercial real estate. Be flexible and smart when you are trying to get into the real estate market. This will put you in a position where you can capitalize on amazing opportunities which others miss, and end up making a deal which brings you great

ScienceDaily (Sep. 24, 2012) ? In the early stages of that vast undertaking known as the Human Genome Project, enthusiasm ran high. The enterprise would be costly and laborious but the clinical rewards, unprecedented. Once the complete blueprint of life was unlocked, the genetic underpinnings for a broad range of human maladies would be laid bare, allowing custom-tailored diagnosis and treatment and revolutionizing the field of medicine.
Or so it was thought.
Instead, "scientists were confronted with thousands of mutations in the collection of proteins in personal genomes, with no ready guide about what they meant in terms of health or disease," according to Sudhir Kumar, a researcher who directs the Center for Evolutionary Medicine and Informatics at Arizona State Unive rsity's Biodesign Institute.
Kumar explains that scientists and clinicians have turned to computer tools that sift meaningful variants from the glut of mutations they face. But the accuracy of these tools may be low, says Kumar.
Now Kumar, Li Liu and their colleagues describe a new technique that can reduce the rate of false positives in such tests, thereby increasing their reliability. The group's results recently appeared in the advanced online issue of the journal Nature Methods.
The new technique, labeled EvoD (for Evolutionary Diagnosis) capitalizes in part on comparative genomics -- an examination of DNA positions across evolutionary time and between diverse species -- to analyze the likely significance of particular human gene variants. EvoD was shown to work much better for positions that are the most evolutionarily conserved in the protein-coding portion of the human genome -- known as the exome.
As co-author Liu explains, researchers have taken a keen interest in mutations occurring at ultra-conserved sites in the exome, as these are usually the most critical in terms of protein function. Variants that are functionally damaging at such locations -- where evolution is highly resistant to change -- are likely to have profound effects on health, often producing so-called Mendelian diseases, which negatively impact health. EvoD performs better than existing methods in diagnosing these mutations.
The Center for Evolutionary Medicine and Informatics now provides EvoD as an online tool and genomic researchers have begun to use it already. The new technique and the tool pave the way for a deeper understanding of genomic variance and advances the quest for personalized disease diagnoses.

ScienceDaily (Sep. 25, 2012) ? Understanding and evaluating art has widely been considered as a task meant for humans, until now. Computer scientists Lior Shamir and Jane Tarakhovsky of Lawrence Technological University in Michigan tackled the question "can machines understand art?" The results were very surprising. In fact, an algorithm has been developed that demonstrates computers are able to "understand" art in a fashion very similar to how art historians perform their analysis, mimicking the perception of expert art critiques.
In the experiment, published in the recent issue of ACM Journal on Computing and Cultural Heritage, the researchers used approximately 1,000 paintings of 34 well-known artists, and let the computer algorithm analyze the similarity between them based solely on the visual content of the paintings, and without any human guidance. Surprisingly, the computer provided a network of similarities between painters that is largely in agreement with the perception of art historians.
The analysis showed that the computer was clearly able to identify the differences between classical realism and modern artistic styles, and automatically separated the painters into two groups, 18 classical painters and 16 modern painters. Inside these two broad groups the computer identified sub-groups of painters that were part of the same artistic movements. For instance, the computer automatically placed the High Renaissance artists Raphael, Leonardo Da Vinci, and Michelangelo very close to each other. The Baroque painters Vermeer, Rubens and Rembrandt were also clustered together by the algorithm, showing that the computer automatically identified that these painters share similar artistic styles.
The automatic computer analysis is in agreement with the view of art historians, who associate these three painters with the Baroque artistic movement. Similarly, the computer algorithm deduced that Gauguin and C?zanne, both considered post-impressionists, have similar artistic styles, and also identified similarities between the styles of Salvador Dali, Max Ernst, and Giorgio de Chirico, all are considered by art historians to be part of the surrealism school of art. Overall, the computer automatically produced an analysis that is in large agreement with the influential links between painters and artistic movements as defined by art historians and critiques.
While the average non-expert can normally make the broad differentiation between modern art and classical realism, they have difficulty telling the difference between closely related schools of art such as Early and High Renaissance or Mannerism and Romanticism. The experiment showed that machines can outperform untrained humans in the analysis of fine art.
The experiment was performed by computing from each painting 4,027 numerical image context descriptors -- numbers that reflect the content of the image such as texture, color and shapes in a quantitative fashion. This allows the computer to reflect very many aspects of the visual content, and use pattern recognition and statistical methods to detect complex patterns of similarities and dissimilarities between the artistic styles and then quantify these similarities.
