Prep football: Marin Catholic sharp in 49-7 victory over Novato

With his team comfortably ahead in the third quarter, it might not have looked like a good idea for Marin Catholic High quarterback Jared Goff to try to run through a tackle from a Novato defender Saturday rather than avoid the contact and get ready for the next play.

But as the Wildcats showed for the entire 48 minutes, taking the easy way out was not part of the game plan against the host Hornets.

As a result, Goff in fact ran over the potential tackler en route to a 17-yard gain. Goff also was effective with his arm, throwing for 269 yards and five touchdowns as Marin Catholic prevailed 49-7.

"I have to give credit to everyone," Goff said. "Our offense executed and Akili (Terry) ran well. Then the

passing game, I threw the ball a few yards downfield and the receivers did the rest."

Marin Catholic (6-1, 4-0) finished with impressive offensive numbers. In addition to Goff's passing, Terry carried for 155 yards and two touchdowns. And the Wildcats defense also was sharp with four interceptions and a fumble recovery.

That team-wide effort made for a long day for the Hornets (3-3, 2-1).

"They executed far better than we did," Novato coach Travis Brackett said. "Goff is a very good player, they ran the ball well, their offensive line did a good job and on the defensive side of the ball, they stopped us when they had to.

"They did a good job stopping our run and we had some costly turnovers early. And like we've seen

in the past and like we've talked about, whoever you're playing it's tough to give the ball away. And if you're playing a team like that, it's damn near a death sentence to give them a 20-yard field."

Marin Catholic jumped out to a 14-0 lead as Goff hit Colton Hanley with a 33-yard touchdown pass and Terry added a 10-yard touchdown run, but Novato responded as Nate Barkus caught a 42-yard scoring pass from Christian Bosley late in the first quarter.

From there, however, Marin Catholic dominated.

"I'm proud of our guys," Marin Catholic coach Mazi Moayed said. "We continue to get better every week and a lot of our senior leaders have been stepping up and leading the way. It was good to see."

From the Novato perspective, the Hornets' effort is one they would like to avoid repeating in future weeks beginning next Saturday against Redwood.

"This one's going to stay with us for a while," Novato's Corey Inman said. "We'll just have to come back on Monday and get ready for Redwood. And we'll be ready next Saturday."
