It?s time to start looking at The Other Seasonal Hiring Rush in the retail world, and the forecasts are that it will be a pretty good one this year.
The two largest home improvement retailers are both anticipating more seasonal workers this year than in 2012. It is getting closer to spring and that?s when the owners of residential properties, and some commercial ones, especially in the colder climates, crawl out of their houses and start to plan some improvements.
Home Depot Wednesday said it plans to add about 80,000 temporary workers for the spring shopping rush, about 14 percent more than last year. And, while most are strictly seasonal, last year about half of the 70,000 workers Home Depot brought on were actually kept on in permanent jobs, a spokesman told Bloomberg News.
As for their chief rival, Lowe?s plans to hire 45,00 clerks, stockers and other store personnel. Last year the chain brought in about 40,000 people.
The biggest reason for the 2013 spike is a recovering housing market. When the value of a house starts to appreciate, homeowners take a walk around the property and begin thinking that some renovations or fresh landscaping might not be a bad idea.
